Preparing for the World Championships 4 months Away.

Four months to go until the 18th WKF World Championships in Finland. At this time athletes around the world are involved in heavy training schedules in preparation. They will be traveling to as many international events as possible to gain as much experience as possible before the World Championships in Tampere, Finland in October. The World Championships take place only once every two years which makes each

championship that much more important to the athletes.

Each athlete and international coach has their own training methods which have worked for them. You will therefore see a certain amount of diversity in how they prepare. As we fill our Champion Training Diaries section with lots of Training Diaries from many different athletes around the world, we hope you will see certain similarities as well as the methods specific to the athlete or coaches. Karate champions are known for being intelligent. They can take information analyze it, and see what can work for them. The Training Diaries should turn into a great resource for those who wish to find new training methods to push their performance higher.

Is it too late so close to a major tournament to change an athlete's strategy or techniques? With four months to go, my personal opinion is that you're getting close to not wanting to change too much but rather perfect the weapons you already have mastered. However, there is still time to make some adjustments. Remember, at this level of competition an athlete probably has quite a few techniques which can be executed close to perfection. He or she can therefore make small, yet possibly incredibly important, changes using what you already have in your perfected arsenal. It can be as simple as taking a tiny side step during the execution of a combination, or perhaps adding a feint. Ultimately this is where you need to trust your coaches. If you are in the unhappy situation of not trusting your coach then you need to train on your own or with a friend and asses objectively if the change or changes you're making are going to be of benefit to you by tournament day or just distract you and take training time away from your regular routine. I hope you trust your coach. It's a far better scenario.
